Nah. That you know they exist, what they mean in common English (eg "VAN = shared service, AS2=point-to-point, etc) and where to go when you "must" use a particular mode of communication is sufficient. (It would also help to know when to suggest alternatives.. eg, who needs AS2 "for security" if either you or your partner has an FTP server and can assign unique IDs? Plenty enough secure!)
