Lissa and Yugandhar,

Also a good answer.  And yes, consult the EDI or file specs is always necessary
to complete step 1 of my last response.  In some cases, you have similar
questions for a customer sending you an order FF - it all needs to be mapped
and
yes you have to have matching specs to complete that task/step.

I did a 10 month contract at Lilly Pharmaceutical in Indianapolis and set up
multiple test cases.  But I wouldn't begin to offer direction on test cases
for another industry.  Usually when you get into test cases, all the other
areas
you identified come into practice.   Lilly has an entire CSV (Computer System
Validation) process that includes all of those areas and then some, as I'm sure
the DoD has as well.  Various industries such as defense or pharmaceutical have
very stringent validation, including business & test case for both internal
controls and to meet those for higher requirements (i.e. federal government,
etc.)

Oh gee..  856's complicated??   Who would have thought!#@%!...  LOL

Have  a great week.

Louisville, bordered by Indianpolis IN (N) to Evansville IN (W) to Cincinnati
OH
(E) to Bowling Green KY (S), let me know immediately!!

Well said Ken.

Also, don't forget to consult the EDI Implementation Guide, has one been
created?  It is a snapshot of the ANSI X12 856 that outlines the specifics for
internal use (between trading partners).

-the guide should define the exact segments and internal qualifiers agreed upon
by both parties (not the whole X12 list)
-the guide will help you to ensure compliance is met in the header, detail and
summary portions of the transaction set
-do you have any business use cases to follow?
-is there a testing plan?

I worked on a Dept. of Defense contract for 13 years and the 856 was the main
logistics transaction set that we used/tested/implemented.  Good luck with the
HL loops, can get complicated sometimes.

Best Regards,

Lissa Lucht

Your ultimate test (case) is if it passes testing and meets the customer
specs...

1.  Completing your own personal testing during (map) development,
2.  Submitting and pass testing with your Trading Partner or 3rd party test
company.
3.  For inbound EDI, the final test comes when you move into production
and start receiving qualifiers that were not part of the tests and/or EDI Specs.

If you are actually looking to build a test case, you may want to check with
who

you work with and modify an existing 856 test case to meet the requirements of
the new Trading Partner.  I have some experience with setting up and executing
test cases, but wouldn't begin to offer direction in this forum...

Test cases are at least partially defined by each company's processes, but in
the end, the ultimate test or question is does it meet your trading partner
specs & requirements AND especially for 856's, did your customer receive it on
time?

Thanks,

Ken
