I think I may have a more catholic interpretation of 'business process'
than you do.

X sends the same transaction to 100 partners and has 18 different maps
to do it. This means his EDI processing is complex, but no change of EDI
system will remove that particular complexity, since it is dictated by
his business requirements.

Y is a hub, and can dictate the mapping. Despite this with thousands of
trading partners he finds it necessary to send the same document
according to four different EDI standards using five different networks.
Once again it is the business need which introduces the complexity.

Z has grown large by acquisition. He receives transactions from many
different sources (and with consequent variety of mapping flavours), but
additionally has to route the translated information in each case to two
different applications. One is 'accounts', but unfortunately the other
is one of a choice of three, depending on whether the ordered produce is
chilled, frozen, or fresh. The EDI system has a heck of a job to split,
identify, map, and route appropriately; often based on heuristic
examination of the transactions. Now you can fairly argue that Z needs
to rationalise his business processing, but it is that processing which
dictates the complexity of the EDI system.

Chris
