An excellent point.  I have worked in both manufacturing and distribution
centers, where suppliers furnish either raw materials for further processing
or finished goods to be boxed with other items.  It is absolutely critical
that any substitutions be coordinated with them and the trading partner so
there are no unwanted surprises when the goods arrive at their final
destination.

I would say your key challenge is agreeing with your vendor(s) and coming up

with a well-defined set of rules for what kinds of changes can be accepted 
how long after the initial order date or how soon before the scheduled ship 
date.

No, that has nothing to do with data formats or ERP system integration... it

is, however, the most important thing.
