Ok, to be a little more helpful...

> Does anyone have a better idea [for serializing files]?

I don't know your mapping software, but if you can't do this using it, are
sending via FTP and don't mind "going external" I market a little FTP
client I created which has "serialization" of files sent as a standard
feature.

I created this a a command-line tool for use in (unattended) EDI
environments but I have several customers using it for all kinds of stuff.

Basically what you do when setting up the "Send" for a partner is, create a
"send as" filespec and include a special token meaning "serial number" in
that spec.

Let me see if I can find the doc page for that... here it is .....

"In the 'Upload As' a list of Constants is supplied and may be used.

[SERIALNO] will be replaced with the next available sequential number for
this network, in the form of a six-character string with leading zeroes, eg,
"23" would be "000023."

[CCYYMMDD] is replaced by the current date in this format

[HHMMSS] is replaced by the current time in this format. When used, the send
routine always forces a one-second pause so the next file sent will not get
the same value.

[FILENAME] is replaced by the name of the source file minus path and
extension; in this case "mail_out"

[FILEEXT] is replaced by the file extension of the source file; in this case
"new"

...

(See next page for examples of advanced token replacements)...

...

The replacement tokens are most useful when you have multiple files to send;
the [SERIALNO] token is very handy for this. The serial number is never
duplicated.

Multiple tokens may be used in the same filename; for example the "Upload
 As" string...

FILE_[CCYYMMDD]_[HHMMSS]_[SERIALNO].TXT

...will result in a file name similar to..

FILE_20080403_152332_000024.TXT

== END CLIP FROM DOC.

The software will do a whole lot of things automatically. Inbound, it will
normalize ("unwrap") EDI data with your choice of line termination (very
handy when working with the Trading Partner/PC and/or Mercator/DataStage
products), archive everything downloaded "as is" and copy or append the
ANSI raw or normalized data to a separate location; outbound it does
wildcard selection of files to be uploaded to the partner with renaming -
WITH THE TOKENS AS ABOVE.

I wrote this primarily to compete with Trading Partner's plug-in FTP module.
Emanio gets nine hundred bucks for theirs; I get one hundred ninety five and
I include decent logs of the communications sessions. There is no limit on
the number of partners or defined connections, each with their own separate
connection, upload and download specs.

If you are interested in the full doc and/or an evaluation version (fully
functional but it stops working after "N" days) just drop me a note off list
and I'll take care of that for you.

(Evaluation offer applies to everyone).

I'll also see if I can't get a good product abstact on my web site. I've
been eager to get back to my 'supply chain' product line now that I have
dropped the healthcare stuff.
