For what it's worth... A. I had the same problem - "no Real World test data" - back in 2001 when I was developing the Provider Payment Partner(tm) System (http://www.providerpaymentpartner.com ) to process the X091 (0004010-based) 835 Remittance Advice. Mostly I ended up "rolling my own" until the Real World caught up. (Shameless self-promotion aside: PPPS version 4.0 does support the X122 005010-based '835' . The PPPS is also (still!) for sale...the whole nine yards, copyright, source code, and I'm even throwing in the domain name). B. When I expanded into the other transactions, there was someone selling test data , which I purchased.. let me see if I can find where I got that.....yes, someplace called "HCCO".... I don't have the details anymore (file is dated 2001) but they might be offerering test files for the X1xx (005010-based HIPAA) implementations. Google might be your new best buddy. Good luck.
