I have two cents, too: Once you've actually been in "the software business"
you'll know that obtaining samples of every possible end-user creative
effort to mangle a standard format is exceptionally difficult and one is
often forced into modification of what you actually have just to test what
might be.

A couple of weeks ago there was a thread here re "quoted price does not
include testing" ... something at which I (apparently naively) was totally
flabbergasted as I had believed for the longest time that "testing" was
always included in the price of on-spec software.

News flash: if you are putting a product out on the market for "anyone" to
license and use, it had better be tested or you will be in deep doo-doo.
What you can't test for want of Real World Data *will* become a "service
pack" or "maintenance release." These are expensive so you do whatever you
can to reduce the number of same.

Walk a mile in our shoes, Mrs. H. Shelfware development is a world away
from doing on-spec work for a single client.
