>What is the best practice for the use of Interchange Control References >(ICRs) in the UNB segment? Is it considered acceptable to duplicate >ICRs for different message types for the same Sender/Receiver ID pairs? >Does, or will, VANs such as GXS reject duplicate ICRs? Normally the ICRF is implemented as a numeric reference which is incremented for each successive interchange sent to the same trading partner. The vast majority follow this practice. Some organisations examine ICRF and reject out of sequence interchanges (particularly when handling stock movement and incremental price and product data messages). They may insist on a separate sequence for each message type (EDIFACT interchanges seldom contain mixed message types). Most ignore it completely! Occasionally (I have encountered this with automotive messages) the recipient specifies a form for the ICRF which includes alphanumeric lead characters which they use for routing the interchanges internally, rather than using the Application Reference to do this. Bad practice, but one does not want to lose business by being too much of a purist, so their wishes are implemented. VAN's do not normally check the content of the ICRF field (although they may expect the references in UNB and UNZ to match). At one time Tradanet (EDI*SWITCH) did reject an interchange which was identical to one handled previously, although whether this was done on the basis of ICRF or some checksum I do not know. However this is no longer the case, and anyway Tradanet is a UK specific VAN which GXS appear to be trying to phase out in favour of TGMS. Most VAN's allow you to send 'binary' files, and by sending EDI specified as such they will not perform any analysis of your file. We sometimes use this capability to avoid problems with unusual character sets.
