It's extremely important if the fed mandates it. The problem seems to be that ICD-9 and ICD-10 cannot be mapped to one another, therefore, when ICD-10 is implemented, everybody must be able to deal with it immediately. Further issues: many entities rely on software companies to update their packages to manage ICD-10, and those software companies can't be expected to do this without making a buck for their efforts. There is no financial help coming from the fed or anywhere else to do it. It can be a very expensive venture.
Do we need ICD-10? Above my pay bracket. If it's mandated, do we need to do it? Damn straight. It's official: the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced it will delay implementation of the ICD-10 diagnostic code set beyond Oct. 1, 2013. But today's announcement did not specify for how long ICD-10's starting date would be postponed. The statement said that HHS would "initiate a process to postpone the date by which certain health care entities have to comply with [ICD-10]." That seems to refer to a rulemaking process that includes solicitation of public comments and leads to a final rule. Industry analysts speculated that the deadline might be put off for a year or two, according to Healthcare IT News.
