It's Friday, but I put an OFF-TOPIC on it anyway ;-) > They may drag their feet long enough to skip ICD-10 and move to the > new ICD-11. ICD-11 is under development and it could create codes > longer that ICD-10 that could create some more problems..I mean > opportunities.
Here is a prime case of the government mandating changes that have absolutely no use except employing a lot of Healthcare, Accounting and I.T. people. It's only contribution is to increase the price of Healthcare, which is already overburdened with bureaucracy and legal (malpractise) issues. ICD9 is adequate for billing. It is used in most EMRs by physicians. The change does not improve the standard of care or even make any process more efficient. It is a total waste of time. If it was only an updated revision, then the impact would be minimal. Unfortunately, the changed codes will need to be learned and converted across the whole spectrum of healthcare. The codes that physicians previously used will have to be changed. Databases will have to convert or keep multiple codes for the same procedure. Waste. Of. Time. My $0.02 as a Canadian involved in Healthcare and EDI. Fortunately, we don't have your Healthcare billing issues, and ICD9 is in common use with (hopefully) no changes on the horizon.
