My two cents worth is that it depends on who you're trading with. In
your situation with the 944 there shouldn't be any confusion about the
item that is being reported on. However, with suppliers getting POs from
customers (particularly in retail), there is sometimes no telling what
variation of UPC, NDC, or internal item number a customer will use on a
PO. In those cases the description can be very helpful in identifying
the item and in setting up the lookup tables. Once they are set up,
though, the descriptions are just useless baggage.
