There is work, but it's tied to efforts in the UEFI Specification Working Group
(USWG) that aren't public until published by the UEFI Forum. You should see
some NVMe work in EDK II once the next spec is ready for release.

Subject: [edk2] UEFI and NVM Express
I'm curious if anyone has heard word regarding NVM Express support in UEFI. In
particular, if any mention has been made about updates to the spec to add a new
PassThru protocol. I've heard about NVM_EXPRESS_PASS_THRU_PROTOCOL and was
asked to support it, unfortunately no public documentation exists anywhere that
I've seen.
Perhaps someone can shed some light on this?
