Many years ago express editions either omitted x64 code generation or were for non-commercial use. It looks like those problems are gone with Visual Studio 2013 express desktop edition. After a lengthy download (4.7GB ISO) I uninstalled the full VS2013 and installed express. For EDK2 use, testing shows it is a drop in replacement for the full version. Help, About shows that it is a 30-day trail. I doubt anything happens to the command line tools after 30 days. If it is a problem, a free indefinite license is apparently available if you 'sign up' with Microsoft: http://superuser.com/questions/722364/visual-studio-express-edition-2013-30-days-free-trial-period-completed Thanks for pointing out the possibility of using VS2013 express for EDK2 build use.
