Dear readers of edstat and sci.stat.edu,

I want to clarify the current status of the edstat e-mail list and the
sci.stat.edu newsgroup. There is a gateway between the list and the newsgroup
so that messages posted to one are automatically forwarded to the other. This
means that ideally the same messages appear both places.

However, since February 15, only subscribers to edstat have been permitted to
post messages to edstat. (This new policy was a desperation move to eliminate
spam messages from edstat so that people would stop complaining to the NC State
postmaster. The postmaster will shut down the list if the complaints do not
stop.) Messages posted to edstat by edstat subscribers appear on the list and
are forwarded to the newsgroup. There is a problem, however, with messages
posted to the newsgroup: Most newsgroup readers are not edstat subscribers.
Therefore, when their messages are forwarded to the edstat list, they bounce.
This means that the messages making it to edstat are currently a (rather
small) subset of the messages going to the newsgroup.

We will continue to work with the NC State postmaster to identify a different
solution to the spam/complaint problem. In the meantime, I want posters to the
newsgroup to realize that their messages are not being forwarded to edstat, and
therefore are not being included in the edstat archives at
http://jse.stat.ncsu.edu/
If you would like your messages to be forwarded to edstat, you must subscribe
to edstat. If you subscribe to the digest version, you will receive just one
message a day that you can easily delete. (Unfortunately, our majordomo
software does not offer a "nomail" option.)

I'm sorry that this has all been such an inconvenience.
