A more elegant way may be the RANK-procedure. You can store
RANK-Values, N as Number of cases, in a new variable,
even for subgroups.
RANK myvar /BY groupvar /N
INTO NofCases .
(syntax maybe not quite accurate, see in the users help).
BTW I would like SPSS to have a BY option in EACH
transformation statement - but is there any hope?
