this conference notice reminds me of a sobering commentary i read somewhere
recently. the writer had always enjoyed academic success until he decided to
teach underprivileged teens, which caused him to frequently encounter large
amounts of depressing failure, both of his own efforts and of his students'.
in particular, he noted the corrosive effects of belonging to the 50% who score
below average on SATs, and knowing in advance you'll end up there so why even
try. so i have to ask myself if i can still take any pride in my high scores
knowing that they're based on such a miserable foundation.

Any resemblance of any of the above opinions to anybody's official position is
completely coincidental.
