this is precisely the problem ... since, there is essentially NO control 
over the selection OF the sample ... and that is the key

for a mail survey for example ... or a telephone poll ... YOU are in 
control of who you mail to or phone ... though obviously you are not 
necessarily in control of who, from that sample ... opts to respond
