Mark,

you might be interested to know that the University of Wisconsin in
Madison, where I live, regards teaching *one* four-credit class per
semester to be a 60% work load, which comes out to be about *25* hours
per week commitment. I believe this is a fair estimation how much it
takes to teach a large lecture course (200-300 students) at this
University.

On the other hand, your 10 hour per week figure might be a reflection of
some fairly aggressive cost saving tactics, rather then what it really
takes to teach *well* and be a good supervisor.

For you information, the base salary of a Lecturer at the University of
Wisconsin is about $33,000 per year with full benefits. As I said, one
course amounts to 60% appointment. The benefits package changes as of
last year: prior to 1999, you had to be in a Lecturer job at more than
50% for 6 months continuously before benefits kicked in, but the state
legislature changed that.

I believe that kind of compensation is fair and appropriate for any
community where education is highly valued. Does your situation
qualify?

Hope this helps,

        - Petr
