Hello Bob and All --

I think SOME long phrases are discussed in The Browser's Dictionary, by
John Ciardi. I don't know if it is still in print, but it is authoritative
and fascinating. (Perhaps not a lot of statistical terms and phrases,
though...)

I went to a big bookstore and found two relevant references.

A Dictionary of American Idioms, a Barron's paperback, $12.95
This one has introductory material in six languages, including Arabic
and Chinese!

The American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms by Christine Ammer, $32

These looked roughly comparable -- each one contained some things the
other did not. Only the second passed the chicken test!-)

Thanks to all who participated in the discussion which finally
motivated me to go look. (I guess my excuse is that big bookstores
are a recent thing this far north.)
