If the library has Psychometrika you could try the reference given in
SPSS Professional Statistics 7.5:
Takane, Y., Young, F., de Leeuw, J. (1977). Nonmetric individual
differences multidimensional scaling: An alternating least squares method
with optimal scaling features. Psychometrika, 42: 7-67.
De Leeuw is around the group I believe, so you might get a better answer.
