If you are considering S+ you should look first at R to see if it has
what you need. R is a freeware version of S+; it lacks some features but
may have everything you need. Also, S+ (at least the versions I have
used) has a well-known memory allocation bug that causes memory
requirements to increase rapidly as a large calculation proceeds. It may
have been fixed in recent versions, but R does not have this bug.
