Andrew,
  Your university's psychology department may
have a consulting unit for quant. psych. questions.
Why, I wonder, would your advisor not have references
for you?   Similar to what another poster said, there's
a bunch of stuff- statistically - you should/need to know 
before doing this.  I suppose there are path analysis/sem
'cookbooks' out there.  But I always cringe at the thought
of researchers using methods they only understand partially.
What's that cliche - 'A little knowledge is a dangerous thing"?
Or something like that.  But I digress. 
Anyways, I think the LISREL manuals will have these cookbook
explanations.  Or I think
http://www.ssicentral.com/lisrel/mainlis.htm
might have info.  There's alot of stuff online if you just
google 'structural equation model'.
