SIDEBAR

many moons ago ... i had applied (why i have no idea) for a position ... and (why i have no idea) was invited to an interview

during the time there, there was a meeting where the president was part of one of the many interview meetings (which tells you about the size of the institution) ... and, he had looked over my vita and ... noted that i had not had very much "scholarly" publication activity in the recent year or so to which i replied ... that i had been spending that time working on a revision to my text

what he said next floored me (keep in mind, this was the PRESIDENT of the institution):

" ... well, you know of course that according to [and he cited some group] ... textbook writing is nothing but HACK work ... "

being in an interview ... you don't always say what is on your mind but ... my first thought was: well, who the heck provides the textbooks that all the students need in all the courses they take at YOUR institution ... ???????

i thank my lucky stars that they did not offer me THAT job
