At at least one schol in the USA, posting of grades with student numbers is no longer acceptable - excess public disclosure.
Last 4 digits of Social Security # _may_ fall in the same consideration. I won't even give homework to a room mate. What they choose to share is their business. As far as the original ethical question, I'd say that code numbers for names would be a suitable protocol for confidentiality, esp. if the professor kept the key. After all, occasionally we want to do research on things that involve warm bodies..... To me the real question is, why does the software provider want the grades? to prove that the software was used?
