A S-&-L diagram does this, without identifying anyone else

so would a simple tally (which i use since i am not a fan of s and l) ... simple histogram ...
a boxplot would be ok but, not as informative (perhaps) as the above since it gives no info about frequencies at a score position

maybe we should vary the display as an educational exercise ... get them used to seeing data displayed in a variety of ways?

in most larger courses ... there is no such thing as handing back tests ... since many (yes ... too many i agree) are multiple choice so, having them see their score on their paper would be a nightmare for the instructor

thus, you need some way to get these scores into the hands of the students ... some places post scores in some online pw protected format where students can easily check ... but this security can be compromised at times ... most will post some list on a door or bulletin board ... for easy access ...

using some special codes complicates things in large classes ... the mechanics of it are not simple ...

again ... to 99.9% of the students ... this is not a problem ... and, as long as you don't use their full names ... or, full SS ids (which have other implications for problems) ... they don't seem to worry about this like we seem to be

they just want to know their scores

finally, i have yet to observe students wandering around trying to look at test score listings from OTHER courses (than the ones they are taking) ... to see what info they can get ... A) they are too busy for that and B) i find it hard to think many would feel this was worth any of their time
