FWIW, My students choose a random number from an envelope containing slips of paper. They write the number instead of their names on the exams. Their names are written on the back of the slips of paper, which go into an another envelope that is not opened until after the exams are graded so I don't know whose exam I'm grading. Students see stem and leaf displays of the individual exams, but not of the totals. No one ever sees anyone else's grade. It's the 21-st century. I email them their grades. :-) Students may go out of town, but never so far that they lose email access.
