the law does not say that grades are secret pieces of information ... any student (and this happens all the time) can tell any other student his/her grade ... it says that grades are confidential and in control of the student ... no one outside of the student has a right to reveal a person's grades to others not in the loop (even an advisor can't tell some casual person what john smith got) ...---> Not so. The law says student academic records are to be kept from anyone, casual observer or not (except, of course, persons with an academic right to know--like academic advisers).
secret and confidential are not the same
and, i think it is true that if a class of students all gave their approval ... the instructor could post their names and grades publicly
i would like some evidence that we have this pack of students roaming around seeking out grade information on OTHER students ... ? i do think that we should not post names of students with their grades nor their grades with full SS numbers (posting SS numbers has other associated risks besides revealing grades) but ... beyond that, i see no need for all this fuss about trying to hide or communicate the scores or grades students get ... in a pubic place ... to students ... in fact, they WANT it
for me ... my public place is on a 2nd floor ... down the hall ... around to the right and then another left ... how many students other than those in my class are really going to seek this spot out all in the name of finding out what some other student has done on a test?
'cmon now
