You may not like the term, but "qualitative research" is established and
in common use in the social sciences and related fields.  You can do a
library search or visit Amazon.com and find many books with "qualitative
research" in the title.  

There are, of course, basic research principles applicable to all
research, qualitative of otherwise, but the qualitative researcher's
concepts of sampling and generalization are somewhat different than
those of others.
