Same here, can't open Scribus (stable "Scribus Version 1.4.0.rc3 27 March 2011 Build ID: C-C-T-F-C1.10.2 Using Ghostscript version 9.04" on Ubuntu 11.10) as normal user, get error message "Scribus crashes due to signal #6" (exactly like the screenshot in John Janney's post above), and Scribus then closes if I click OK on the error message. But I'm able to open and use Scribus if I run "gksudo scribus" from the terminal.
