We are planning to pilot a 1:1 laptop program in our fourth grade next year using Asus's eeePC and edubuntu (our students currently use carts of ThinkPads that stay at school). Our campus is 95% Windows and uses active directory to manage access to network shares and printing. We also use active directory credentials to control web access through Websense. These laptops will travel home with students at night, so they will need to have local home directories. Does anyone else have a similar setup? In this situation, would you bind these machines to the domain? If not, how would you set up authentication? I'd like to avoid asking kids this young to keep track of multiple passwords.
