The PPA is "stable", 300+ Greek schools are using it. What you're referring to might be some earlier alpha ltsp-pnp implementation for which I sent a message that it won't be supported anymore since it has gone upstream, and people should use the upstream ltsp-pnp method instead.
That PPA does contain a newer LTSP version than the one in 12.04, and it's more or less the version shipped with Debian Wheezy. Sure, you can try it if you want, but better do that on a clean 12.04 installation, since the LTSP upgrade from 12.04 to more recent versions isn't working well (different formats for nbd-server configuration files, for ltsp configuration files etc).
So if you want to test that, I'd suggest using a clean installation + having a backup plan, because it's quite possible that the problem isn't solved in that version either.
