Chères et chers collègues, Le séminaire général de l'équipe "Sciences, normes, démocratie" (Sorbonne Université, CNRS) reprend, avec deux séances prévues en octobre. - Le mercredi 20 octobre à 11h nous recevrons Philippe Colo de l'Université de Duisburg-Essen. Sa conférence est intitulée « A game-theoretical approach to expert-based knowledge ». En voici le résumé : We are laymen on most of the knowledge we claim to possess. Today’s science is too vast for a single individual to master it by himself. We say we know about the mechanism of climate change because of what we heard from experts of those fields. On such topics, our claimed knowledge relies much more on the confidence we have in these experts, than on the evidence we can directly access. In this paper, I propose to use the notion of Nash equilibrium to justify the epistemic dependency in experts. A layman will be justified in believing a proposition transmitted to him by an expert if sending this message is an equilibrium action. I apply this approach to the case of climate change and derive a negative result: no information transmission can happen at equilibrium. In other words, in this context, a benevolent expert is not a reliable source of knowledge for laymen.
