The Geneva (Switzerland) education department has been using Moodle for years and is quite satisfied with the platform. A few films were produced on the subject:

That is probably fine for us, I do not think that we will have hundreds and hundreds of simultaneous participants. I do have not any personal experience with a Moodle course addressing thousands of attendees.
