Endian doesn't use a init.d script for clamd ;) all the GUI scripts call 
the restartclamav. MY guess of what happened was that clamd died when 
you upgraded and since it was not running it could not be notified. 
[Clamdscan has an API to notify clamd to reload the databases upon 
update so does freshclam, but obviously clamd has to be running to do 
this.] So just starting clamd by hand should have fixed the problem.
