I had some old isa 3c509 Nics, and keep having trouble with them, even if they were "auto conf", or "manually configurated"... For a few €, i decided not to have any probleme and buy only 8139 chip cards, that are cheap and quite efficient... i know it doesn't answer your question, but 3com is quite a nightmare for my ipcop/endian config usually...
