I'm in the same boat. My internal www server (running geeklog with a gallery plugin) was acting the same way. That's why I liked the internal DNS solution. You use the same URL and it just works. Why try to break a firewall when you just need DNS to point you to the real server IP?
If you are being sent outside, your connection is being NATed as it heads from the Green to the Red. It is then again sent through the NAT process as it moves from the Red to the Orange (assuming the www server is in a DMZ, but still a NAT if you're getting tossed back to Green). If you've got the DNS server, why not just use it? I'd not suggest hacking at the hosts file on the machines or even in Endian. There's just no need, and if you ever change the IP of your www box, you have to edit each hosts entry instead of changing just one DNS A record. Michael J. I had actually thought about that to be honest. I run a separate DNS server that also happens to sit on the same box as the web server. This wouldn't be hard to do at all, but I thought that maybe there was a simpler way to do it. I could also hack the hosts file as the machines that need access are Windows machines. I will have to try this to see if it actually works. The problem that I am having is that the web server hosts my photo gallery using Gallery, the open source free PHP image gallery. Since it's specified the web address of the server, it works just fine from outside but internally if I just go to the IP none of the pictures are displayed. Thanks for the response though, I appreciate it. I'm going to do a bit more testing a digging in maybe in the mean time somebody will be able to offer up a different solution. Thanks! :) Mike Knisely wrote: > > The way I have dealt w/ this is to use an internal DNS server to redirect > my requests so they are not going out to come back in. > > If your Endian box is your DNS server, it is quite easy to do.
