It is free as in beer (at least that version),
and it will make better use of the hardware. I have an older HP ML350 server I
might re-purpose in this manner since it would be a waste to just run a
firewall on it. I wish I had some extra hardware to play with first, but I
guess I won't need this server for a few months. I can have 2 copies of a
firewall, and maybe run DNS and other functions in other virtuals.

The ESXi kernel runs on the bare hardware and is based on some custom linux
code, and only takes something like 32 MB, and the rest is available for
whatever you need.
