The easiest way to rule this out one way or another is to turn off 
hardware raid and try to install. If it works then your problem is the 
raid controller. But that is not the end of the world since you can use 
software raid and frankly the performance difference is going to to be 
very small.

That's just my $.02 and how I would go about debugging this.
