Hi Keith,
I've not used that approach myself, as I have always had other internal DNS
servers to do the heavy lifting. It makes sense that you could put in specific
records, and it would answer queries for those specific records. Since you've
used this feature more, I will definitely trust your word more than mine :).
But I think the original question was, if a client gets an IP from the DHCP
server running on EFW, will EFW actually accept the client's attempt to
register using dynamic DNS? I didn't think that capability existed, so please
let us know if you've seen that work.
I still have a need, almost 100% of the time, for a true DNS server internally;
one that can answer queries for MX, NS, SOA, PTR, etc., so I just have not used
EFW as the main DNS server. I like its proxy function, though. And please,
let me know if there's some button in this thing that I should be pushing more,
regarding DNS.
Thanks Keith,

Shaun

Shaun

I must be missing something here...EFW can act as a DNS server for its
internal zone.

It uses dnsmasq which acts as a composite DNS/DNS forwarder/DHCP server.
As well as using DHCP leases to populate the DNS server it can also use
the contents of a host file (usually /etc/hosts). I don't think it can
do zone transfers, or act in master/slave roles so its not suitable for
larger more complex networks.

I use it routinely for setting multiple aliases for internal systems,
and for setting aliases for external systems.

Regards

Keith
