As a reveiwer of Richard's book, I can report that it is first class.

Richard covers the nuts and bolts of EJB programming, and provides
guidance on usage patterns and design approaches. More of the latter
is needed, but this is the case for the entire EJB industry, as the best
practices are still evolving.
