Your last question is the right one. The JDeveloper beta you are using had
several bugs wrt EJB deployment - the problem you are seeing sounds like
one of them. Try using the official release version - it works just fine
for deploying EJBs to 8i. All the ports you tried were good, but just the
wrong version of JDeveloper!

By the way, have you tried running any of the EJB demos we shipped, just to
a test that the 8i installation is actually run and running properly? They
are in %ORACLE_HOME%\javavm\demo\demo.zip...
