Inprise Corp., maker of application development tools, Monday unveiled plans
to release the beta version of InterBase 6, the next version of its flagship
database product, in open-source form for multiple platforms, including
Linux, Windows NT, and Solaris.
The source code is scheduled to be available in early 2000. The company,
formerly known as Borland Corp., says it will
continue to sell and support InterBase 5.6 through normal distribution
channels.
The company expects that moving toward an open-source platform will result
in a higher degree of reliability, security, and total cost of ownership for
customers, which include Boeing, MCI, Motorola, NASA, Nokia, Northern
Telecom, and the U.S. Army.
Inprise, which has strongly backed the Linux open-source operating system,
says it will disclose details of its rollout plans for the InterBase source
code on its Web site.
Investors approved of the news, with Inprise closing up 2-7/8 or 26% to
13-15/16. - Tischelle George
