I use Gemstone/J, which has a built-in OODBMS, and I find myself
not needing entity beans at all. I map relational data from oracle
to regular java objects that are stored in the Gemstone persistent
cache (which is what they are calling their ODBMS) and they are accessible
by all session beans. The access to these objects is governed by the same
container managed transactions as relational data access, so you can even
do a 2 phase commit with objects and relational data in the back. (as long
as you have only one data source or a JDBC 2.0/XA compliant driver)

The Entity bean model is totally geared towards relational data stores.
If an entity is a regular java object transactionally shared between all
your sessions, as is the case if you have an OO database, they are totally
useless.

Theoretically ODBMS are the next generation database after relational,
unfortunately a lot of places are just now catching up to relational,
and also, most OO databases can't handle the volume that say an Oracle 8
can.
They also lack tools for manageing the database and reporting.
I would probably not use an OODBMS as my database of record, but in the
mid tier, as an application database and cache, I think it's an excellent
idea.
