Tolu,

I think what Shanti is trying to address is questions that are easily
answered on the vendors newgroup by posting or reading previous posts. These
kind of questions relate to product configuration and do not start of some
kind useful discussion. For example asking how to set up the jdbc
connections properties in web logic is more appropriate for web logics
newsgroup. I think people should come to this forum when they want to
understand and questions the design concepts and the vendor implementations.

I would not like to discourage newbies to this forum. We need them since
they come with questions that when addressed cement our understanding and
sometimes bring a refreshing view. I feel that sometimes after spending too
much time with a tool or technology that you forget or ignore the reasons
why you do something the way you do it. Maybe you do it because your current
server does not support what you want from it. By listening to these
questions we allow ourselves to re-think and re-evaluate our design
decisions. We ensure that when we move to the next project (new server) we
do not take with us these limitations into our designs - we leave them with
the previous implementation. This forum should be about how we would like
our world to be like. By dicussing, constantly re-evaluting and listening
and voicing our moans can we force either all containers to be relatively
equal or as the highlander saying goes "There can only be one". William of
the Clan McCloud.

I am currently working in the banking sector which has a lot of projects
relating to redesigning of old systems (cosmectis surgery imho). The people
redesigning these systems are the same people who designed the previous
system. The problem with this is that they are not really adopting the new
world. Now not everthing old is bad, but why rewrite a system in a different
language only to turn out the new system with a slightly better face. When I
entered I this sector I questioned the reason for basically redrawing the
old consoles in the java swing api. To me the big improvement could only
come about by designing the system tailored to how the user would better
perform his task. This requires task analysis. When the task analysis was
finished what was obvious that the current design was building stuff that
was not needed and inherenting old technology limitations. What was required
was to look at how we could better design the user's task without holding on
to the old concepts. This all goes back to my belief that most programmers
should not solely design the user interface. This problem is most likely
documented in detail and in better form somewhere else on the web so I leave
it to you to find it out.

kind regards,

William Louth
