I guess I'll have to answer this one :-)
First of all, jBoss is rather different from everyone else since we did
not have a business that "decided" to go OpenSource. Instead we have an
OpenSource effort, and decided to make a business plan around it. The
main sponsor of jBoss is Telkel, where I work, and a description of what
we do is available at www.telkel.com. The info there is rather sparse
right now, but the main idea is to provide services around jBoss, mainly
hosting. Predatory productization of jBoss is made impossible by the use
of the GPL license. This is to protect the interest of our developers,
us included.
However, although we are the main company behind the jBoss technology,
we are far from alone. Currently there is a whole range of people who
are interested in jBoss, and who are helping out with various parts.
These include individual consultants wanting a low-priced alternative
for EJB projects, ISV's wanting an open and low-priced architecture for
bundling with apps, and even an ERP-vendor who will build their next
generation of services on top of jBoss, mainly because the architecture
is extremely open and customizable.
So, while we at Telkel pioneered this thing, it has now grown way beyond
just us. It is a fullblown community, and will continue to grow as we
step up and parallelize the development.
"Going RedHat" wouldn't be very visionary, and anything less would not
be very interesting.

Rickard, Server Technology Program Manager @ Telkel
