Take a look at this package from the IBM Zurich Labs...

Probably the most popular generic Java logging package around, that will
make you app server independent. Logs to syslog, nt event log etc.. and I
think there is an appender to log to JMS queues also.
And just to make things a wee bit more interesting, here is another one from
