I'm not sure Curt's question was really answered. All the JMX based
configuration and logging in EJBoss is great, but its hardly portable
between app-servers. An app-server portability is one of the major selling
points of EJB.

We too have fairly detailed requirements for logging. Basically, a bean
should just be able to log a message with a given code and parameters. A
log server will receive the log message, and will send it to one or more
destinations (a destination being a file, database, email address, JMS
message, UNIX syslogd daemon, Windows NT event service, SNMP trap, etc) on
the basis of filters attached to each destination that will eliminate some
messages (say, based on severity) from the destination. I'm just wondering
what the log server should be in a J2EE environment. A receipient of JMS
messages (therefore, log messages are JMS messages), an RMI server (but I
then have some questions about whether all the EJB servers out there
support stand-alone RMI services), a stateless session EJB (which sounds
like a good idea...), a servlet????

James W.
