Hello,

It's funny to see that a little survey like the one that jim put together can
create such a fuzz. I'm sure it was only meant to be a fun little thing rather
than a serious analysis of the current market situation.

Obviously many factors are influencing the score. For the server I work for
(Orion) I can see many things that affect the results a lot, for example:

* Orion isn't listed, which means less people will vote for it, not being a
visible alternative. It also means that they have to write down a name for the
server, and some people write "Orion", some write "Orion Application Server",
some write "Orionserver" and some don't write any comment at all, making them
appear under "Blank". These things make the number look a lot lower than it is.

* Someone cross-posted to an orion-interest mailing list, which means that a few
Orion users saw the link and went to vote. This affects the results in the
opposite direction. This should of course be done to all vendors or it will
affect results (and as jim says: "Please share this email with other EJB
developers so we can get a large base.")

How these things affect the total results are impossible to predict. And it's
impossible to know how much employee voting, etc. is helping the larger
companies.

Making surveys like this is extremely difficult if you want accurate results.
However I doubt that people will make any important decisions based on a survey
like this, so I don't really see any harm in it. Survey's like the JDJ Reader
Awards probably do a lot more harm in that they can actually look real to some
people.

It's just a fun survey. They say nothing about the real pictire, but a vote is
always fun.

Regards,
Karl Avedal
