There is no support in the "application"-oriented J2EE specs. However, I
would suggest that the most portable way to write daemons is(/will be)
to do it as a JMX MBean, since that is a spec. that is likely to be
widely supported, and has many interesting features that are valuable
when writing daemons (e.g. built-in timers, automatically manageable,
and configuration).
