OK, I don't want to beat a dead horse, but I will, since this is (almost) on
topic for this mailing list...

I agree that VA + WebSphere is probably the richest development environment
in which to build EJBs, and I happen to be a fan of VA. I also agree that
Kawa + J2EE can be limiting in some ways (having to redeploy when you make
code changes is a pain). Having said that, I still prefer Kawa + J2EE, for
the following reasons:

- Kawa is $130, and the J2EE RI is free.
- I don't know what VA Enterprise + WebSphere costs, but I bet it's a lot
more than $130.
- Visual Age and WebSphere are big fat enormous memory hogs.
- Visual Age looks at the world differently. Those of us who didn't grow up
with Smalltalk aren't big fans of the shared repository ("Oh, two people
were working on the same piece of code? Just have the 'owner' of that piece
of code do a diff!" "Ummm... don't I use source control so that I don't
*have* to do diffs?!?")
- I don't know a single person who didn't have difficulties installing
WebSphere.
- All of that "code generation" stuff doesn't mean much to me. How big of a
convenience is it *really* to have your Home interface generated? Maybe 20
lines of code?

Obviously, whatever tool works for you is the one to use. But until I
absolutely need some functionality that isn't provided by Kawa/J2EE, I'll
stick with my $130 solution.

Although offtopic, I have to disagree strongly.
With VA You can get a simple EB up and running
in about 3 Minutes, because it generates everything
except Your business method implementations.
You can change the implementation and test without
having to redeploy Your bean.
This is simply impossible with Kawa & J2EE.

While I'm not so impressed from WebSphere,
the EJB development environment of VA is
the most productive I've seen yet.
